Wheelchair Basketball World Championship
From Hoopedia
The Wheelchair Basketball World Championship (sometimes called "the Gold Cup") is one of the two major international wheelchair basketball competitions. The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation administers both of them. (The Paralympic Games is the other one.) Each competition takes place every four years. The Paralympic Games have always been held in the same year as the Olympic Games. Since 1986 the World Championship has been decided in the even-numbered years between Paralympics.
The Men's World Championships were first played in Belgium in 1973. The competition for Women began in 1998. While the American men dominated the tournament in the early years, Canada's men's team has been very strong in recent years. Canada's women have won the championship every year it has been contended.
