Winthrop University (formerly Winthrop College) is an American public, four-year liberal arts college in Rock Hill, South Carolina, within the Charlotte, North Carolina metropolitan area. In 2005, Winthrop University had an enrollment of 6,480 students.

Winthrop University athletic teams compete on the NCAA Division I level and are a member of the Big South Conference. Winthrop athletic teams are known by the nickname "Eagles". The teams' colors are garnet and gold. The athletic department offices are located in the 6,100-seat Winthrop Coliseum located one mile from the University's main campus.

Men's Basketball

The Winthrop University men's basketball team has earned a slot in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, and 2007. They are coached by Gregg Marshall. They have also won the Big South Conference Championship title in 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007. In 2006, the men's basketball team's season ended with a close loss to the University of Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. In 2007, Winthrop defeated Virginia Military Institute 84 to 81, clinching the Big South championship along with a NCAA bid. Winthrop men's basketball team made the Top 25 college basketball polls for the first time the week of March 5, 2007, placing #22 on the USA TODAY/ESPN Top 25 poll and #24 on the Associated Press (AP) Top 25 poll. They won their first NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament game in 2007, beating Notre Dame by a score of 74-64.
