A summary of major championships and events in basketball in 1892

Events

January 15 - The Triangle, the International YMCA Training School newspaper, publishes Dr. James Naismith's 13 original rules of the game.

March 11 - A crowd of 200 gathered to watch the first public game of "basket ball," played at the the Springfield, Massachusetts YMCA. The student team crushed the faculty, 5-1 (each basket counted as one point; there were no foul shots yet). Amos Alonzo Stagg, still an instructor at the YMCA Training School, scored the only basket for the losing side.

April 27 - An article in the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that a new ball game, "basket ball" was demonstrated at a New York YMCA. It is described as "like football, but not nearly so rough."

July 16 - The Chicago Inter Ocean newspaper reported that a new game, "basket ball" has been introduced at the West Side YMCA and "is becoming infectious."
