- 1917 - Marty Glickman, voice of the New York Knicks for 21 years, is born in the Bronx, New York.
- 1936 - The United States (above) defeats Canada, 19-8, to win the first Men's Olympic Basketball gold medal in Berlin. Joe Fortenberry leads all scorers with eight points. 1,000 spectators, including Dr. James Naismith, stand through a rainstorm to watch the outdoor event.
- 1959 - Hall of Fame guard Earvin "Magic" Johnson is born in Lansing, Michigan.
- 1989 - Sacramento Kings star Ricky Berry is found dead in his home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
- 1994 - The USA Senior National Team, "Dream Team II", crushes Russia, 137-91, to win the gold medal in the FIBA World Championship in Toronto, Canada. Shaquille O'Neal, who averaged 18.0 ppg, is named tournament MVP.
