- 1904 - Hall of Fame coach Hank Iba, the only man to coach two Gold Medal Olympic basketball teams, is born in Easton, Missouri.
- 1962 - (Above) Philadelphia's NBA franchise, recently arrived from Syracuse changes its name from "Nationals" to "76ers".
- 1965 - David Robinson, "The Admiral," is born in Key West, Florida.
- 1983 - The Soviet Union edges the United States, 84-82, to win the FIBA World Championship for Women. Elena Chausova fires up the winning shot with seconds left on the clock to break the tie and the Americans' hearts.
- 2003 - Puerto Rico defeats the USA, 76-70, in the Pan American Games, leaving the US without a medal for only the second time in history.
