- 1881 - Allie Heerdt, captain of the Hall of Fame Buffalo Germans team that won 111 consecutive games, is born in Buffalo, New York.
- 1883 - Hall of Fame referee George Hoyt is born in Boston, Massachusetts.
- 1928 - Hall of Famer Bob Cousy is born in New York City. In fourteen NBA seasons he scored nearly 17,000 points and dished out almost 7,000 assists. He is the first pro basketball player to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated (right).
- 1977 - University of Tennessee and WNBA star Chamique Holdsclaw is born in Queens, New York.
- 1998 - Yugoslavia rallies in the second half to beat Russia, 64-62, in the gold medal game of the FIBA World Championship.
