The ink was hardly dry on Dr. James Naismith's rules when Senda Berenson Abbott adapted them for women. The game was an immediate smash among women, as it had been among men. The individuals, teams, leagues, and tournaments listed below have been important in the history of the women's game, and is not meant to be all-inclusive for all eras. The women's game was not merely basketball played under rules for women, but also basketball that many teams played using men's rules. Women teams playing by men's rules were found in traveling professional teams, Chicago area semi-pro and professional teams, and some high school leagues in the South and Midwest.
