Erin Phillips

Erin Victoria Phillips (born May 19, 1985) is an Australian professional women's basketball player. In the United States, she currently plays for the Connecticut Sun in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) and for the Adelaide Lightning in Australia's Women's National Basketball League (WNBL).

Personal

Phillips is the daughter of Greg Phillips, a longtime Australian-rules football star. She did not begin to play the game of basketball until she was 13.

Her boyfriend is the Adelaide Crows ruckman Ivan Maric.

College

Phillips attended college in Australia.

WNBA

Phillips was selected 21st overall in the 2nd round of the 2005 WNBA Draft by the Connecticut Sun. She chose to remain in Australia for a year before joining the Sun in 2006.

International

At age 19, Phillips made the Opals, the Australian women's national team. At the 2006 FIBA World Championship for Women, she won the gold medal, with the Opals beating Russia, 91-74.

At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, Phillips won the silver medal, as Australia lost to the US national team, 92-65. Prior to the Olympics she created controversy when she did a photo shoot for men's magazine Alpha, wearing skimpy lingerie, creating hype for the Opals team.

Trivia

She wanted to become Australia’s first-ever female ALF (Australian football's top league) player. Though she settled for basketball, since a women's basketball league was already established in the U.S and it was not politically possible for her to represent her country in Australian football.
