Gary Dwayne Payton (born July 23, 1968) is retired American professional basketball player who played at Point guard. He earned his nickname "The Glove" when his cousin phoned him during the week of the Western Conference Finals against Phoenix and told him “You’re holding Kevin Johnson like a baseball in a glove”.

As a player at Oregon State, Payton was named UPI, NABC and The Sporting News All-American First Team his senior year. He was voted College Player of the Year by Sports Illustrated and Pac-10 Player of the Year by the conference coaches. He finished his career as the all-time leading scorer in Oregon State history with 2,172 points and sixth in the history of Pac-10. He was also selected to the Pac-10 All-Decade Team. He was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1990 NBA Draft. He then signed with the Los Angeles Lakers then the Miami Heat. He was quoted as saying " I like to stay with Shaq. When he moves it's just my job to follow him". Unfortunately, Shaq did move on, to the Phoenix Suns but Payton didn't move with him.
