Early Life

He grew up in Poway, California and attended Poway High School.

College

Buechler attended college at the University of Arizona, where he played for the Arizona Wildcats. He played for the Wildcats from 1986-1990. He scored a total of 1,144 points for the Wildcats in college career. He was named Arizona's Most Valuable Player and was a member of the 1990 All-Pac-10 First Team as a college senior. Buechler was also an All-American volleyball player at Arizona. As a two sport athlete, he earned the nickname "The Judge".

NBA

Seattle SuperSonics

Buechler was selected in the second round (38th pick overall) of the 1990 NBA Draft by the Seattle SuperSonics. He never a game for the SuperSonics. The SuperSonics traded his draft rights to the New Jersey Nets in exchange for the Nets agreeing not to select Georgia Tech's Dennis Scott with the first pick in the 1990 NBA Draft.

New Jersey Nets

The swingman got into 74 games with the Nets as a rookie, starting 10. He averaged 3.1 points and 1.9 rebounds in 11.6 minutes per game, shooting .416 from the floor. The Nets had five rookies on their roster, and only Derrick Coleman got more playing time than Buechler. In total, Buechler scored a total of 232 points with the Nets in his rookie year.

He played in only two games in the 1991-92 NBA season with the New Jersey Nets. He was waived by the Nets on November 8, 1991 as the Nets tried to make room under the salary cap to sign Kenny Anderson.

San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs claimed Buechler off waivers four days later when Paul Pressey went on the injured list. He played in 11 games for the Spurs, averaging 3.0 points and 2.0 rebounds in 12.7 minutes per game. He scored a total of 33 points with the Spurs. He scored 8 points against Utah on December 6, 1991, and grabbed 6 rebounds against the Minnesota Timberwolves on November 20, 1991. The Spurs waived Buechler on December 17, 1991, and only a few days later it was learned that he had been playing with a fractured navicular bone in his right wrist.

Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors signed Buechler as a free agent to a one-year contract on December 22, 1991, and placed him on the injured list. He took advantage of the downtime to develop a lefthanded shot while his right arm was in a cast. He eventually appeared in 15 games with Golden State, averaging 1.9 points and 1.9 rebounds in 8.1 minutes per game.

Buechler made an impression on the Golden State Warriors while playing for their entry in the Rocky Mountain Revue summer league in Salt Lake City, Utah. He averaged a team-leading 15.6 points, along with 4.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists, in seven games. During the regular season, Buechler was the only member of the injury-plagued Warriors to suit up for all 82 games. He posted career highs for points (6.2 ppg), rebounds (2.8 rpg), assists (1.3 apg), and minutes (18.4 per game). Buechler sat out because of the coach's decision 12 times but played in each of the last 27 games, averaging 8.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.4 assists during that stretch. He averaged 9.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 34.9 minutes in nine games as a starter and led the team in scoring twice, with 17 points against Washington on February 14, 1993 and 15 points against Houston on March 18, 1993. Buechler scored 19 points at Dallas on April 2, 1993. He also recorded season-highs for three-pointers made (4) and attempted (6) in a 16-point, 24-minute outing against the Philadelphia 76ers on March 1, 1993. He finished the season with the second-best assists-to-turnovers ratio (1.7-to-1) on the team, trailing only Tim Hardaway (3.2-to-1.0).

Buechler continued to find spot work under Golden State Warriors Coach Don Nelson's "go-to-the bench-early-and-often" system, in Buechler's third strait season with the Warriors. He appeared in 36 games in 1993-94, totaling 106 points and 32 rebounds in only 6.1 minutes per game. Buechler logged more than 10 minutes nine times during the year. He scored 18 points on April 21, 1994 against the Sacramento Kings, tying a season high for minutes played with 17. Buechler missed three straight contests in mid-December with the flu and spent five games on the injured list in early March with a lower back strain.

Chicago Bulls

He was signed as a free agent by the Chicago Bulls on September 16, 1994. He began the year on the injured list with tendinitis of the right knee but was activated on November 12, 1994 after missing six games. He returned to the injured list in March when the knee flared up a second time and missed 11 games. For the season, Buechler appeared in 57 contests for the Bulls, averaging 3.8 points and 1.7 rebounds. He torched the Boston Celtics for a season-high 17 points on December 3, 1994, one of five contests in which he hit for double figures. He came off the bench for Chicago in all 10 of the club's postseason contests, averaging 2.0 points in 10.4 minutes per game. Buechler hit for a 1995 playoff-high 8 points in Game 5 of the Bulls' conference semifinals series against the Orlando Magic. The Bulls, who had gone 47-35 during the regular season, were eliminated by the Magic in six games. Jud scored a total of 217 poits with the Bulls in the 1994-1995 NBA season.

For the second year in a row, Buechler gave the Bulls a reliable backup man at forward who could also play guard and contribute when called upon. He played in 74 games during the regular season and in all but one of the Bulls' 18 playoff contests. A solid shooter, Buechler averaged 3.8 points in 10.0 minutes per game during the regular season. He sank 40-of-90 three-point attempts for an impressive .444 accuracy mark, and his 40 treys ranked fifth on the team despite his limited playing time. He scored in double figures six times, including a season-high 14 points at Milwaukee on December 9, 1995. In the postseason, he averaged 2.7 points in 7.5 minutes per game, with a high of seven points in Game 3 of the first round playoff series against the Miami Heat.

Buechler's versatility made him an important member of the Chicago bench even though he didn't see much playing time, as he provided depth at both small forward and shooting guard and gave the team a spark with his hustle and determination when he was called upon. Buechler appeared in 76 games, averaging 1.8 points and 1.7 rebounds in 9.3 minutes per game, in the 1996-1997 NBA season. He scored a season-high 12 points in a 111-69 rout over his former team, the San Antonio Spurs, on March 5, 1997, and notched 10 rebounds and six assists in a 128-102 win at Philadelphia on April 7, 1997. He also blocked three shots in a 99-98 loss to the New Jersey Nets on March 14, 1997. Buechler appeared in all but one of the Bulls' 19 playoff games, averaging 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds in 7.7 minutes per game.

Buechler registered 11 points and 5 rebounds in a 118-90 victory over the Denver Nuggets on March 3, 1998. He scored 11 points (4-5 FG, 3-4 3FG), in 13 minutes, in a 97-75 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on February 23, 1998. Jud scored 9 points (4-7 FG), in 14 minutes, in a 90-79 victory over the Boston Celtics on January 14, 1999.

Detroit Pistons

He was signed as a free agent by the Detroit Pistons on January 22, 1999 in the 1998-1999 NBA season. He recorded 13 points (3-5 3FG) and 4 rebounds in an 84-71 victory over the New Jersey Nets on March 24, 1999. Scored all of his 9 points in the 4th quarter, on 3-of-3 three-point shooting, in a 94-87 win over the Dallas Mavericks on March 19, 1999. Buechler scored season-high 16 points, hitting 4-of-6 three-pointers, in a 101-93 victory over the Phoenix Suns on February 19, 1999.

Buechler played a total of three seasons with the Pistons. He played with the team until 2001.

Phoenix Suns

He was traded by the Pistons along with John Wallace to the Phoenix Suns for Clifford Robinson on June 29, 2001. Buechler played six games with the Suns, scoring six points.

Orlando Magic

Buechler was traded by the Suns to the Orlando Magic in a three-way deal in which the Magic also received the option to swap 2005 second-round draft picks with the Los Angeles Clippers, the Suns received Bo Outlaw, a future first-round draft pick and cash from the Magic, and the Clippers received Vinny Del Negro from the Suns and cash from the Magic on November 16, 2001. Buechler played in sixty games with the Orlando Magic and scored 105 points. He was waived by the Magic on July 24, 2002.

He scored a total of 2,385 points in the NBA, playing in 720 games.
