- 1931 - Hall of Fame player Frank Ramsey, who won seven NBA championships as a Boston Celtic, is born in Corydon, Kentucky.
- 1954 - Right: Hall of Famer David "Skywalker" Thompson, who helped to invent the alley-oop pass play, is born in Shelby, North Carolina.
- 1963 - Spud Webb, at 5'7" the shortest player to participate in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, is born in Dallas, Texas. He won the event in 1986.
- 1981 - Magic Johnson signs a $25-million, 25-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.
- 2000 - Mike Jones, Rasul Salahuddin, and Wayman Strickland lead the NBA Ambassadors to a 103-68 victory over the Chinese Basketball Association All-Stars in the decisive third game of the Asian Basketball Association League (ABAL) championship series. The NBA Ambassadors, coached by Hall of Famer Nate "Tiny" Archibald, represented the National Basketball Development League in the six-team ABAL.
