- 1932 - NBA player, coach and announcer Johnny "Red" Kerr is born in Chicago, Illinois.
- 1942 - NBA star, Streetball legend, and Hall of Famer Connie Hawkins (right) is born in Brooklyn, New York.
- 1958 - ASK Riga (Latvia) defeats Akademik Sofia (Bulgaria), by an aggregate (two game) score of 170-152, to win the first-ever FIBA European Champions Cup (now called the Euroleague championship).
- 1971 - Calbert Cheaney, who played 13 seasons in the NBA, is born in Evansville, Indiana.
- 1974 - The ABA Memphis Tams are renamed the Memphis Sounds. It didn't help.
- 2000 - The West cleans up on the East in the second WNBA All-Star Game, 73-61. Tina Thompson of the Houston Comets is selected MVP, based on her 13 points and 11 rebounds in 16 minutes of play.
- 2007 - Australia routs Taiwan, 74-44, to win the women's division of the William Jones Cup. Australia's Hollie Grima is named tournament MVP, as she averages 15.2 ppg and 6.3 rpg in six games.
