• 1939 - Hall of Fame coach Sue Gunter, who coached college ball for 40 seasons and won over 700 games, is born in Walnut Grove, Mississippi.

• 1963 - NBA Board of Governors approve the request of the Syracuse Nationals to move to Philadelphia. They were renamed the Philadelphia 76ers.

• 1988 - (Right) Dominique Wilkins and Larry Bird trade basket for basket in the fourth quarter of Game 7 of the 1988 Eastern Conference Semifinals until Boston escapes with a 118-116 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. Wilkins finishes with 47 points and Bird has 34 -- with 20 of his points tallied in the fourth quarter.

• 1994 - The Toronto NBA franchise unveils their team name--Raptors--and logo.
