- 1900 - The National Basket Ball League -- the first professional league -- crowns its first playoff champion. The Trentons (above) defeat the Millville Glass Blowers, 22-19, in the third and deciding game.
- 1951 - 2005 NBA Coach of the Year Mike D'Antoni is born in Mullens, West Virginia.
- 1970 - The New York Knicks, inspired by the return of an injured Willis Reed to the starting lineup, win their first NBA Championship, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers, 113-99 in Game 7.
- 1988 - Right: Michael Jordan scores 226 points in the Bulls' five-game Eastern Conference First Round series against Cleveland, breaking Bernard King's record of 213 set in 1984.
