The New Orleans Horpnets are an American professional basketball team in the NBA, the team is based in New Orleans, Louisiana. Franchise Name History
Prior to the NBA's 1987 expansion movement, club officials formed a committee to name the team. From this committee, the nickname Charlotte Spirit was selected.
However, this brand new name never made it to the uniform manufacturer. Because public response to the name was poor, the owners gave in and held a contest once it was officially announced that an NBA team would be playing in Charlotte.
Fans submitted many names to the contest, held in conjunction with the Charlotte Observer. After carefully evaluating all entries, the owners selected names and asked the public to vote on them. Included in this group were the Gold, because legend states that gold was discovered in Charlotte even before the California rush; the Knights, because Charlotte is known as the "Queen City"; the Spirit, the owners' previous choice and the Hornets.
The Hornets prevailed by a landslide vote over the other names. The name "Hornets" goes all the way back to the Revolutionary War when British General Charles Cornwallis wrote to the King of England in his battle report from the Carolinas that "this place is like fighting in a hornet's nest."
The Hornets name is not new to Charlotte. There was a farm team of the Minnesota Twins in Charlotte called the Hornets, as well as a franchise in the World Football League by the same name. The Hornets moved to New Orleans for the start of the 2000-01 season.
The Hornets spent the 2005-06 in Oklahoma City because of Hurricane Katrina.
