- 1923 - The Renaissance Five (above) play their first game, hosting the Collegiate Five at the Renaissance Casino. The Rens win, 28-22. They are the first black-owned, fully professional basketball team. For the next quarter-century they would be one of the best teams in the world.
- 1950 - Five-time NBA All-Star Paul Westphal is born in Torrance, California.
- 1977 - Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkens (right) replaces Bob Hopkins as coach of the Seattle SuperSonics, who at that time had a 5-17 record. Under Wilkens, the Sonics went 42-18 for the rest of the season and made it all the way to the NBA Finals, where they lost in seven games to the Washington Bullets.
- 1991 - Luc Longley, rookie center for the Minnesota Timberwolves, clocks four minutes against the Dallas Mavericks to become the first Australian player in the NBA.
