- 1910 - Legendary Hall of Famer John Wooden (right) is born in Hall, Indiana. The Purdue University All-American and superlative UCLA coach is the first person to be elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame twice: first as a player and then as a coach.
- 1970 - Ohio State star Jim Jackson, named College Player of the Year in 1992, is born in Toledo, Ohio.
- 1978 - Yugoslavia prevails over the Soviet Union, 82-81, in overtime, to win the gold medal at the FIBA World Championship.
- 1987 - An investment group led by Jerry Colangelo buys the Phoenix Suns for $44.5 million.
- 2004 - Houston defeats Sacramento, 88-86, in an NBA preseason game. The game is remarkable because it is played in Shanghai, China, the first time two NBA clubs met in China.
