1973 - Rebecca Lobo, who won the Naismith Award as the best female player in the nation in 1995, is born in Southwick, Massachusetts.
1993 - Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls announces his retirement from the NBA at a news conference. Jordan's retirement after nine seasons came less than four months after he helped lead the Bulls to their third consecutive NBA Championship. The "retirement" would last less than two years.
