Owl Field Club
Owl Field Club, of Newark, New Jersey, was an amateur African American basketball team in the early 1900s. The team was one of the major eastern black basketball powers around 1911-12.
Owl Field Club was the dominant African-American athletic club in New Jersey, winning state championships in track and field as well as basketball. The club annually sponsored the Owl Field Club Games, considered the premier track and field meet for black athletic clubs in the New York-New Jersey area.
The heavyweight Owls team won the New Jersey state title in 1911, losing only to two formidable teams--Alpha Physical Culture Club and Howard University. The heaveyweights repeated their success the following year. The Owls Junior team in 1912 took the New Jersey title.
