- 1948 - Hall of Famer center Bob Lanier, the legendary center for the Detroit Pistons, is born in Buffalo, New York.
- 1960 - The USA wins the gold medal at the Rome Olympics, beating Brazil, 90-63. Oscar Robertson and Jerry Lucas both average 17 ppg to lead the American team.
- 1972 - At the Munich Olympics the Soviet Union defeats the United States, 51-50, to win the gold medal, breaking the US team's 63-game Olympic winning streak. The controversial victory came when, after the clock had expired, FIBA chief R. William Jones over-ruled the referees, ordered the clock reset and gave the Soviets another chance to score.
- 1992 - The NBA begins its three-day World Clinic at the Central Universitario Mexico Gymnasium, making it the first NBA event ever to be held in Mexico.
- 2000 - Right: Following a long and successful, but controversial tenure, Indiana University Indiana University head coach Bobby Knight is asked to resign his post. Knight refuses and is fired.
