- 1898 - Right: Hall of Famer Eddie Gottlieb is born in Kiev, Russian Empire. He earned the nickname "The Mogul" in part because he profoundly influenced the development of American professional basketball as a player, coach, owner, rule-maker and executive from 1916 until his death in 1979.
- 1917 - Hall of Fame player Buddy Jeannette is born in New Kensington, Pennsylvania. He was two-time MVP of the World Professional Basketball Tournament.
- 1982 - The Houston Rockets trade Moses Malone to the Philadelphia 76ers for Caldwell Jones and a 1983 first-round draft choice.
- 1995 - NBA Players Association player representatives ratify the terms of a new NBA Collective Bargaining Agreement by a vote of 25-2, after resolving issues regarding the salary cap. Ratification by the owners follows shortly after and the lockout is lifted.
