1983 - The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association adopt the first anti-drug policy in major professional sports. Under the current program, all players are subject to random testing for banned substances during the pre-season period, rookies are subject to random testing three times during the regular season, and all players are subject to testing for reasonable causes at any time. Steroids were added to the list of banned substances in 1999.
1999 - Men's and Women's basketball teams from South Korea visit North Korea for the first time in history. Teams from the two countries mix their players on the first day of the Inter-Korean Reunification Basketball Games. In an apparent effort to be polite, no one plays any defense, with the results that, on the women's side "Solidarity" beats "Unity," 133-127, while the "Unity" men prevail, 129-104.
2002 - Above: The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame formally opens its new 80,000 square-foot, $103 million building.
