- 1948 - Team USA defeats France, 65-21, to win the gold medal in the London Olympics. Alex Groza and Ray Lumpp lead the scoring with 11 points each.
- 1979 - John Bunn, Hall of Fame coach who had a 313-288 record at three different colleges, dies at 80.
- 1985 - Inventors Paul D. Estlund and Kenneth F. Estlund receive US Patent No. 4,534,556 for a "Break-away basketball goal." The invention paved the way for the legalization of dunking at the college level.
- 2002 - Edna Campbell (right) of the Sacramento Monarchs makes a triumphant return to the court after triumphing over breast cancer twice. In 2006 WNBA fans voted it the "Greatest Inspirational Moment in WNBA History."
