Underwood Trophy was a trophy offered by the Underwood Typewriter Company for the women's basketball championship between Canada and the United States. The trophy was offered from 1923 through 1939, and all championship series were won by the Commercial Grads of Edmonton (popularly known as the Edmonton Grads, Alberta, Canada.
The competition was on a challenge basis, and was conducted as a two, three, or sometimes four-games series. The peculiar rules of the Underwood Trophy stipulated that the team garnering the most points through the series would be deemed the winner. The Underwood rules requred that any team issuing a challenge must hold a provincial or state title. In practice, however, a team merely had to be considered a consensus best. But some years the standard was even looser than that, when Edmonton in a couple of years contested for the trophy with at least two teams from Illinois.
Of the 120 games that the Edmonton Grads played for the Underwood Trophy, they won 114 and lost only 6. The average score through out the games was 45-24. The highest score the Grads made was 113 points against the Pocatello Indians in 1931. The lowest score the Grads held their opponents to in this competition was 3 points scored by the Minneapolis Ascensions in 1925.
