In this multiple Oscar-winning thriller, Jodie Foster stars as Clarice Starling,, a top student at the FBI's training academy whose shrewd analyses of serial killers lands her a special assignment: the FBI is investigating a vicious murderer nicknamed Buffalo Bill,, who kills young women and then removes the skin from their bodies. Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) wants Clarice to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins),, a brilliant psychiatrist who is also a violent psychopath, serving life behind bars for various acts of murder and cannibalism. Crawford believes that Lecter may have insight into this case and that Starling, as an attractive young woman,, may be just the bait to draw him out. Lecter does indeed know something of Buffalo Bill,, but his information comes with a price: in exchange for telling what he knows, he wants to be housed in a more comfortable facility. More important,, he wants to speak with Clarice about her past. He skillfully digs into her psyche,, forcing her to reveal her innermost traumas and putting her in a position of vulnerability when she can least afford to be weak. This WW II comedy centers upon a hapless German general (played by Buster Keaton in one of his last roles) who is stationed in Italy the night before the Allied invasion. Two Yankee POWs are planning to steal the plans for the Nazi offensive strategy. The Germans anticipate this and replace the real ones with phony plans. At least that's what they were supposed to do. Actually a mix-up results in the real plans being left out for the Americans to steal. During the offensive,, the two soldiers are captured by the German general. The fellow is rather absent-minded and a tad confused so when the soldiers dress up as Hitler and an SS general,, the poor man is totally fooled. The Brute is a typically fast and furious British "exploitation" film directed by an expert in that field,, Gerry O'Hara. Model Sarah Douglas is browbeaten (and beaten in other ways) by her behemoth of a husband. Drastic measures seem to be called for,, but to whom can Sarah turn? This slightly unsavory melodrama is unusually well cast,, with Julian Glover and Peter Bull prominent among the supporting actors. Also in the cast is Bruce Robinson,, who later opted for a career behind the cameras as a writer/director (The Killing Fields,, Withnail & I,, etc.) The Brute should not be confused with the vastly superior Bunuel picture El Bruto. ~ Hal Erickson,, Rovi

The Left Handed Gun was adapted by Gore Vidal from his own TV play, The Death of Billy the Kid. 33-year-old Paul Newman stars as 21-year-old William Bonney,, the hotheaded gunslinger known as Billy the Kid. Avoiding the usual Hollywood glamourization of this controversial character,, Newman portays Bonney pretty much as he was: an illiterate,, homicidal cretin. Treated with kindness for the first time in his life by rancher Tunstall (Colin Keith-Johnston), Bonney becomes devoted to the rancher; in fact,, it is virtually a love affair. Soon after, however, Tunstall is killed,, prompting Bonney to go on a murderous spree. In the end, Bonney must face down the other important father-figure in his life, Pat Garrett (John Dehner).
